Summer Camp Week #1- 5th and 6th grade

Last week I finished my first of three weeks of summer camp. Last week I had all 5th and 6th graders and they were a ton of fun! I have been preparing for summer camp for the last month or so getting everything ready. It was challenging trying to prepare 4 hours worth of new material for each day. I am use to preparing 3-40 min lessons a week and doing each lesson 7-8 times, much easier. But as worried as I was the first week was a success!
I had 5 boys and 6 girls, only 2 of which were actually 6th graders. It was funny to see how the boys sat on one side of the room and the girls on the other. During regular class they are paired up boy and girl. The first day I had the students pick an English nick name. It was pretty fun to see the names they picked. These boys choose Alex (in the red), Joe (in the white) and David (in the back).
All the students were a lot of fun and it was a cool experience getting to know these 11 students better. I teach a total of about 250-300 students each week so it is hard to get to know the students. These girls names are Anna 2 (with the glasses) and Lisa. With only 11 students two wanted the same name off a huge list! Ha! Must be because it was one of the first names on the list. In my class I had Ann, Anna 1, Anna 2, Jenny, Lisa, Lizzy, Alex, Joe, David, Christopher and Jacob.
Ann (in the stripes) and Jenny (in the pink).
Lisa and Lizzy! These two girls are best friends and Lisa tried so hard to communicate with me using English, Korean and lots of hand gestures! She kept saying "Teacher speak to me in Korean". They were really funny girls!
Jenny and Anna 1
Anna 2 and Ann! They love peace signs!
David! This kid was hilarious! We were playing a game called bumper to bumper using only food words and he could not think of a food that started with "T". So he said "turtle meat" and I said "turtle meat, you mean to tell me you have had turtle meat" and he replied "Teacher top mart sells turtle meat, made in USA!" They love saying were things are made. When Alex was blowing up these balloons they kept popping or they were just hard to fill with air and he would throw the balloon, "Teacher made in China". But if something is good it is always made in Korea!
The last day we did an Egg Drop. The kids each built a basket to protect their egg and then we took them outside and dropped them from the deck. They really enjoyed making them. One student named Jacob came up to me and told me he was satisfied with todays lesson. How sweet!
Are you surprised, but Lisa's egg survived! I don't understand how or why nor do I know what the 2 straws off the side of the cup are for!
Joe's basket!
Getting ready to drop the eggs! Half of the alien egg babies survived and the other half died! It was a great week and lots of fun! I already miss these kids. Next week I will have 3rd and 4th graders!
