School Lunches

I use to dread lunch time. It was an awkward time were everyone was staring at my lunch tray and making comments about what I have selected to eat. "Oh you eat so little", "This food it not good to you", "I am so worried about you" and on and on. The comments have subsided and they have accepted that I am an extremely picky eater. Now, that I am not worried about the menu and the comments, I don't mind lunch time and occasionally try a new dish or two. I have been surprised a few times by what I actually like!
Each meal consists of three staples: soup, kimchi and rice. Then there are usually 2-3 more side dishes. Wednesday we get something a little more exciting and it is usually my favorite meal of the week. Typically on Wednesday we get curry, clam chowder (which I have just started eating since being in Korea), or a noodle soup such as the picture above. I would not mind most of the soups if they could forgo adding fermented bean paste. The taste is not horrible but it is the smell that really gets my stomach!
The lunch is always really healthy and is packed with different veggies, roots and an assortment of other ingredients.

Don't be fooled, these pictures do not adequately represent my lunch tray. I feel bad about taking pictures at lunch since I don't really eat much. I think they will find it insulting, so I have borrowed these photos from a guys flickr account "hellaoakland". My tray is never nearly this full!

  1. Boy, you really had me fooled for a minute there. I thought she is REALLY getting out of her box with those lunch trays. Very healthy looking. :)
