The beginning of winter also marks kimchi making season. Several teaches have mentioned that they will be spending their weekend making kimchi or going to their in-laws to pick up their kimchi for winter. My co-teachers all rely on their mothers for their kimchi. Christina told me that when her mother is unable to make good kimchi, she will buy it at the store. She has no interest in learning how to make it as it is pretty labor intensive. She also informed me that neighborhoods usually work together to make kimchi to divide up the work. I thought that was really cool!
They are serious about their kimchi around here. The past few days on my way to school there has been a line at the Top Mart with people waiting with their carts to buy kimchi right off the truck. They are buying heaping carts full! So much for the kimchi shortage! P.S, they are waiting in the freezing cold!
Saturday afternoon Justin's co-teacher, Mrs. Kim and her husband brought us a HUGE tupperware of kimchi! Justin was really excited when she mentioned to him she would like to give us some kimchi as a gift, but he didn't know she was going to bring us enough to get through winter. We are in a bit of a dilemma because....
there are raw oysters! Something about raw oysters soaking in the kimchi is a bit unsettling. Who am I kidding, kimchi is a bit unsettling to me but Justin has not worked up the courage to try it. We would hate to see it go to waste because there are literally over 1,000 people alone in our apartment building who would love to get there hands on this.
Anyways, the kimchi season has been a bit entertaining for me because everyday at lunch one of the teachers brings in their families kimchi to share. It is so funny to hear the comments, well the ones I can understand or are translated to me "oh, that one it too salt", "looks very red but is not spicy". One thing I have learned is kimchi is no joke!
