Visit from Mom and Dad- Day 2- Gyeongju

May 5th is Children's Day in Korea so we had the day off from school. We headed to Gyeongju for the day which is about an hour from Busan. Gyeongju is a millennial city that is rich in culture and history. It is the home of the one-thousand-year old Silla Kingdom. We rented bikes and explored the city for the day.
Cute kids on Children's Day!
Our first stop was the Gyeongju Hwangnam-ri Gobungun Tomb park. It contains 30 ancient tombs including Cheonmachong Tomb. It is the only tomb that is open to the public.

Spring was in full effect, beautiful fields of flowers.

Small testaments to enlightenment at Bulguksa Temple.

Lunch time- marinated pork and over 40 plates of banchan.
Seokguram Grotto is a stone temple built in 774. It was originally constructed by piling stones into a dome- like structure then covered by dirt to make it look like a cave. I was unable to take a picture inside. The lanterns are in preparation of Buddha's Birthday on May 21st.
